Subaru has finally confirmed thelaunch of the BRZ STI in their first official teaser. Ever since its introduction, the BRZ was expected toget an STI treatment. The carmaker even showcased an STI Performance Concept at the 2015 New York International Auto Show. Now the highly anticipated BRZ STI will make its global debut on June 8th.
We received an exclusive spy shot of the BRZ STI undergoing its final testing at the carmaker’s US testing grounds in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Part of the STI package includes a large wing, which can be seen both on the test mule and the teaser image. Apart from that, the BRZ STI will get more aggressive bodywork, large air intakes on the front bumper, beefier Brembo brakes complete with red callipers and sportier side skirts. As can be seen in the spied prototype, the hood is expected to remain the same along with a headlight assembly since it was part of the 2017 update. It would be interesting to see if the Japanese carmaker includes bits and cues from the STI Performance Concept in the production spec BRZ STI.
There has been no word about anychanges to the powertrain yet, however, Subaru has confirmed that the STI-tuned BRZ won’t make use of a forced induction motor. A sharper and tuned suspension with better handling characteristic is imminent. The chassis would be tweaked as well in order to makethe car moreagile. The 2.0-litre boxer four currently bumps out 205 horsepower – so expect a little surge in the numbers as well.
Subaru’s American division is the one who dropped the teaser and the test mule was also spotted on American soil. So it remains to be seen whether and when Subaru will introduce the hotter version of the BRZ in other international markets. Further details are due next week. Stay tuned.
