The strike at Hyundai plant near Chennai that began on October 30, ended after the company revoked the suspension of 20 striking workers. However, an enquiry will take place against five of the 20 workers. All the 20 workers are members of the Hyundai Motor India Employees Union (HMIEU).
The employees abstained from work at the factory on October 30. They issued a charter of demands to the company, which included reinstatement of 27 workers who had been terminated from the company four years ago, recognition of the HMIEU by the company and re-negotiation of a wage settlement.
A meeting was held in the presence of officials from the Tamil Nadu government where the HMIEU accepted the terms of a wage settlement between the Korean automaker and company recognised United Union of Hyundai Employees. Hyundai has also said that a no-pay-for-no-work policy would be in force for also those who struck work in that period.
In a move clearly intended to ensure that the fiasco that took place at the Maruti’s Manesar plant on July 18 does not repeat itself here, Hyundai has asked the workers to unconditionally withdraw their protests and settle all their issues through discussions.
