It’s the battle of the big boys, and this time, we are talking about two contenders in the same vein. One is a premium crossover with MPV DNA and SUV build while the other is the latest generation of the most successful MPV to ever be sold in the country. Both the Tata Hexa and Toyota Innova Crysta will be launched this year and are expected to be fighting for top honours. To give you an idea of what to expect, here is a CarWale spec comparison of the cars.
Dimensions
The MPV body style is all about maximising space within and both these cars seem to be doing a pretty good job of that. The Tata Hexa measures 4.76 metres and has a wheelbase of 2.85 metres while the Toyota Innova Crysta is 4.73 metres long and has a wheelbase of 2.75 metres. The cars are evenly matched when it comes to other metrics though a true test of how good the space has been maximised within will be the amount of leg room being offered for the occupants of row three. The Hexa is marginally larger than the Aria while the Innova Crysta makes quite a jump over the outgoing model.
Equipment
The Tata Hexa and Toyota Innova Crysta are both signs that the respective companies want to up the ante when it comes to offering goodies in the cabin. Standard to both models are things like power windows, electric mirrors, touchscreen infotainment system, AC vents for all three rows with climate control, ambient lighting, leather upholstery and projector head lamps. However, the Innova Crysta, which is expected to be in a higher price range, also gets LED DRLs and a host of additional safety features like side and knee airbags, ESC and hill-hold function.
Engines
The Tata Hexa will be offered with the 2.2 litre Varicor400 diesel engine that produces 154bhp and 400Nm of torque. This engine is only offered with a six-speed manual and optional 4WD system. The Innova Crysta’s diesel mill will be a 2.4-litre unit that produces 147bhp and 360Nm of torque. It can be had with a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic which should give it an upper hand over the Hexa.
It seems possible that Toyota may also offer the Crysta with a new petrol engine which in this case will be a 2.0-litre unit that produces 137bhp and 183Nm of torque. This engine too can be had with a six-speed manual or automatic.
Price
We expect that Tata will price the Hexa in the region of Rs 12 lakh to Rs 16 lakh while the Innova Crysta will be priced in the range of Rs 13 lakh to Rs 18 lakh for the top-of-the-line diesel automatic variant.
