The GL-Class finally gets a replacement in the form of the newly launched GLS. Mercedes-Benz fondly calls it as the S-Class of SUVs. Back in December last year, Audi had launched the new generation Q7 in the country. Both the new SUVs sport modern style and fresh feature upgrades. So here we have pitted the two in a battle of specs.
Dimensions
In comparison to the new Audi Q7, the new Mercedes-Benz GLS is slightly longer in length and height at 5130mm and 1850mm respectively. However, in terms of width the GLS measures slightly lesser at 1934mm. In comparison to the older GL, the new GLS is more pronounced with chrome on front-bash plate and has a slightly bigger grille. The rear bumper now gets a chrome strip.
The Audi Q7 on the other hand measures 5052mm in length, 2212mm in width and 1740mm in height. Based on Audi’s new design philosophy it gets sharp angular headlamps that complement the large hexagonal grille. The SUV gets Matrix headlamps with 30 individual light emitting diodes and three reflectors. Moreover, the front sports matte silver insert that enhances its look. Based on a new MQB platform, it is about 325 kgs lighter than its older generation.
Equipment
The Mercedes-Benz GLS gets standard features like panoramic sunroof, auto-dimming rear view mirrors and three-zone climate. The chrome strip at the rear bumper complements the chrome-tipped dual exhausts. Inside, the Mercedes GLS gets a 20.3cm (diagonal) display screen for the infotainment system. The GLS also gets a GLS – AIRMATIC that allows you to raise the ride height for off-roading at just a press of a button. In terms of safety, it gets eight airbags, re-safe system, brake assist, electronic all-wheel-drive traction system 4ETS, ESP, and cruise control.
The Audi Q7 gets interesting features like navigation, four-zone automatic air conditioners and auto park technology with 360-degree view. Inside, the Audi Q7 gets an LCD screen on the dashboard, infotainment system and 19 speakers that pairs with all the devices. The dashboard is made from brushed aluminium, while the lower section gets a walnut terra brow.
Engine
Under the hood, the Mercedes-Benz GLS gets a 3.0-litre V6 direct injection engine that is mated to a 9G-tronic nine-speed automatic gearbox to put out 258bhp of power and 620Nm of torque. As compared to the older GL, the new GLS claims to return an improved fuel economy of about 15 per cent and 22 per cent enhanced torque.
The Audi Q7 is powered by a 3.0-litre TDI engine that puts out 249bhp of power and 300Nm of torque. The eight-speed automatic tiptronic transmission comes mated to an all-wheel drive system. The Audi Q7 can sprint from 0 – 100kmph in just about 7.1 seconds and claims to return a fuel efficiency figure of 14.75kmpl.
Price:
The newly launched Mercedes-Benz GLS 350d is offered at Rs 80.40 lakh. The bigger 450d and 550d options are currently not available in India.
The Audi Q7 is available in two variants in India – the base variant Premium Plus, priced at Rs 72 lakh and the top-end, Technology, priced at Rs 77.50 lakh. Both the variants are powered by the same engine with the only difference being in terms of a feature list.
