- The Skoda Superb received a mid-life update with subtle cosmetic changes with an addition of hybrid powertrain.
- The updated flagship sedan will be launched in India around mid-2020.
Promptly after the global reveal of the updated Superb, Skoda has confirmed that this mid-life update of the flagship sedan will be launched in India by the middle of next year. The Superb facelift gets a refreshed styling but most importantly a new plug-in hybrid variant also joins the line-up under Skoda’s iV sub-brand.
Appearance wise, the Superb gets a new family grille flanked by full-LED Matrix headlamps. The bumpers are akin to the one seen on the Skoda Scala and lend the executive sedan a modern touch. The rear gets a chrome strip joining the LED taillamps and SKODA lettering instead of the logo. The new Superb is slightly longer than the model it replaces and sits on newly designed 18- and 19- inch alloy wheels.
Updates inside the cabin are restricted to added driver assistance programs such as predictive cruise control, emergency assist, predictive pedestrian protection to name a few. Apart from that, a plethora of ‘Simply Clever’ features is also part of the update.
Under the hood, the refreshed Superb continues to use the same set of engine options. Meanwhile, the new hybrid system makes use of the 1.4-litre TSI motor which is mated to a 112 horsepower electric motor. A combined output of 220 horsepower is sent to front wheels via a six-speed DSG automatic transmission. The hybrid Superb has a pure electric range of 55 kilometres.
However, what remains to be seen is whether this new plug-in hybrid powertrain which is offered in the international markets makes its way to our shores. Given that Superb’s direct rivals namely Toyota Camry comes only in a hybrid version, we could safely say that Superb Hybrid is also under consideration for India.
