Skoda has launched the Ambition variant of the Superb at a beginning price of Rs 18 lakh, ex-showroom, Delhi. The Ambition is available in two variants, a 1.8 TSI petrol with a manual gearbox and a 2.0 TDI diesel with an automatic DSG gearbox.
The petrol is priced at Rs 18 lakh and the diesel at Rs 22.5 lakh, ex-showroom, Delhi. It is extremely well priced, considering that it doesn't take away from the experience of owning a premium sedan. Skoda has retained all the features that make the Superb desirable: leather, wood, chrome, projector headlamps, the unique 'twin door' bootlid, etc.
What the Ambition doesn't have are the little things that aren't valued or used much by the Indian consumer. For example, the front parking sensors have been deleted. As has the touchscreen audio system, but it still has a 1-DIN system that graphically displays feedback from the rear parking sensors. The projector headlamps remain, but they aren't xenon lamps and neither do they swivel with the steering wheel or have washers - but they have fog lamps that double up as turning lamps. There is no sunroof, but we feel that is okay, since it is the one thing that the Indian subcontinent does not need. There is no ESP mentioned in the safety features, but ASR traction control and the electronic differential lock both remain.
"The Superb is now a better value proposition than before without detracting from the experience." That's what the company's line is, and for once, we agree completely.
