Skoda recently rolled out the 500,000th unit of its innovative and controversial DQ200 DSG gearbox. First unveiled in 2008, this 7-speed, dual-clutch gearbox has been equipped in a variety of models, from automakers falling under the Volkswagen group.
Designed and developed for small, turbocharged engines, the DQ200 unit has had its own share of troubles since its inception. As some of the existing Skoda and Volkswagen car owners would agree, the DQ200 DSG unit has been involved in quite a few massive recalls in the past, with affected models suffering from frequent power loss and metallic grinding noises in the first gear over rough surfaces.
Since the start of production in October 2012, Skoda's Vrchlabi facility in the Czech Republic has now made half a million units of the DQ200 gearbox. Additionally, the facility manufactures it also for sister brands including Volkswagen, Audi and Seat.
