A report in the French media has indicated that Skoda might be working on a compact crossover that will be introduced by late 2017. This might be Skoda's take on the booming sub-compact crossover segment across the world.
It is rumoured that this new crossover might be built on the same platform as the Volkswagen Tiguan. It might also share the powertrains with the Tiguan. However, we at CarWale predict that it could be built on the T-Roc concept. The T-Roc concept is based on VW's MQB platform that will form the base for the company's future vehicles. Volkswagen is also said to be preparing to upgrade its manufacturing facility in India to make MQB-based products.
While we aren't so sure, but if the new Skoda subcompact is built on the Taigun's chassis, then it might not make it to India like the Tiguan itself. Volkswagen had indicated that the Taigun might be a bit too expensive for the Indian market and that could put an end to the speculation that the Skoda based on it might come to India.
The French media also predicts that the new subcompact will compete with the Fiat 500X, Renault Captur, Nissan Juke and the Jeep Renegade.
The report also claims that Skoda might retain the Yeti and in that case the new subcompact might be priced under Rs 12 lakh if it reaches our shores. The big question is - Will Volkswagen launch a crossover first or Skoda? Only time will answer this question - 2017 that is, until then we shall keep a close tab on this development.
