The 485-foot long Baltic Ace carrying 1,417 Mitsubishi vehicles collided with 439-foot Corvus J in North Sea, claiming five lives and another six still missing. While the Corvus J sustained damage, it won’t sink and the crew onboard is safe. But Baltic Ace on the other hand went under.
The tragedy occurred in busy lanes of North Sea off cost of Belgium and Netherlands. Three ships from Royal Dutch Sea Rescue Organisation along with coast guard aircrafts and helicopters managed rescue operations and were looking for survivors late in the evening.
“The Mitsubishi cars bound for Russia have been lost,” Mitsubishi spokesman Daniel Nacass said, adding that the Tokyo-based carmaker is “deeply sorry for the tragic loss of lives.”
Dutch police are investigating the matter to check if further action is necessary in the case, despite the fact that accident occurred in international water.
