Second generation Audi Q3 spied on test

Initially launched in 2011, the entry level crossover, the Audi Q3 received midlife updates in 2014. However, the spy shot gives away the new crossover in the works and is expected to carry changes which are worth classifying as a generation upgrade.

The spotted test mule is heavily camouflaged. However, we can expect a revamped fascia. The new car is expected to get sharper full LED headlamps – dubbed as ‘matrix’ headlamps. The side silhouette is expected to be the same as the current car. However, we may see stronger shoulder and waist lines as a part of the new style language. The rear end will sport a restyled hatch and a tweaked tail lamp assembly.

Inside the cabin, Audi’s Virtual Cockpit display will replace the conventional instrument cluster behind the steering wheel. A dashboard that is designed horizontally rather than vertically will increase the visual width.

The new crossover is expected to be based on the newly developed MQB platform. This offers a wider track than the current car which will result in a roomier cabin. The powertrain is expected to comprise of a 1.4-litre TFSI engine and an electric motor generating about 130bhp. However, the Indian market will see a 2.0-litre TDI engine as well producing about 150bhp. As in the current car, it will be transmitted via a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox and quattro four-wheel drive.

The second generation Q3 will arrive at its dealerships by 2018 and when launched, the crossover will rival against BMW X1, Mercedes-Benz GLA and the Volkswagen Tiguan.
