Recently a camouflaged Mahindra Scorpio was spotted testing in Karnataka, thus hinting at an upgrade. The face lifted Scorpio is expected to have a slightly tweaked engine and an optional new six speed automatic gearbox.
The 2.2-litre diesel engine of the current Scorpio will be worked to churn out a few more ponies and this new drivetrain will be mated to a standard five-speed manual gearbox which comes as a standard feature in the facelifted car, just like in the current car. But unlike the older Scorpio models, the new facelifted Scorpio will offer a six-speed automatic gearbox as an optional add-on.
Mahindra is outsourcing the manufacturing of the automatic gearboxes to a Japanese company, Aisin. The new gearbox is expected to be refined, responsive and performance-wise, it will be a step above its predecessor.
The XUV500, the flagship SUV from Mahindra is equipped with a similar six-speed gear box from Aisin. But the gearbox unit in the XUV500 is engineered to be mounted transversely unlike the longitudinal layout of the Scorpio. The new unit will be engineered to be mounted longitudinally on the ladder frame chassis of the new Scorpio.
