Renault has said that it is working on mass market electric cars that will be focussed and developed for markets like India and China. Addressing the media during the 2016 New York Auto Show, Carlos Ghosn, Chairman of the Renault-Nissan alliance, said that with tighter emission looming in the future, electric cars were the logical way forward.
He said that despite government support like subsidises and charging infrastructure in China for EVs, the current crop of expensive EVs hardly sold. Instead it had been found that most consumers opted for very basic electric cars priced much lower.
This, he said, has prompted them to develop market focussed strategies and create electric cars that would be cost effective. Ghosn indicated that it would work the same way in India where consumers gave high preference to price when buying a vehicle.
In this regard he said that it was a logical progression to have an electric version of the Kwid hatchback and that we could possibly see such a model in the future. Given the common platforms, we could also expect an electric version of the Redi-GO in the future.
