- Latest round of GNCAP crash tests conducted
- Previously scored higher
The India-made Renault Triber, sold in African markets, recently underwent the Global New Car Assessment Program (GNCAP) crash tests. Reports reveal the MPV received a two-star safety rating.
From four-star to two
Unlike the four-star safety rating received in 2021 for adult protection and three-star in child protection, the Triber couldn't manage to score the same in the latest tests. Though the vehicle showed good protection for the driver's head and neck, it demonstrated weak protection for the driver's chest in both front and side impact. The lack of ISOFIX anchorages meant poor performance for the dummy in child occupant protection with exposure to the head, neck, and chest.
Crash tests and their importance
GNCAP's crash test protocols judge the frontal and side impact protection for all vehicles now with the inclusion of Electronic Stability Control (ESC). Further assessment for cars scoring higher star ratings includes pedestrian protection and side pole impact protection as well. The recent tests were done under the Safer Cars for Africa initiative and the low safety performance comes across as a big concern. Hopefully, these low star ratings will be a wake-up call and encourage improved safety and building safer cars for adults, child occupants, and even road users in the future.
