The Renault-Nissan alliance plant outside Chennai will expand the list of models being produced over the next five years. It currently produces 10 different models for export purpose as well as for the domestic market.
Speaking to CarWale during the rollout of the one millionth car, on January 8, Colin Macdonald, managing director, said there was a clear cut plan to increase local production of a number of models, over the next five years. While he did not specify what the new model lineup was, he did indicate that the assembly lines would roll out both budget models as well as more premium vehicles from across both brands.
The remaining months of this fiscal and next fiscal year will see the plant roll out the 1.0-litre and AMT variants of the Kwid, the production version of the redi-GO and a facelift for the Duster.
The plant aims to roll out 270,000 cars this fiscal and increase this number to 336,000 by the end of the next fiscal year. We believe that the company will surf to the increased target on the wave of demand created by Kwid hatchback. Going ahead, we believe that the CMF-A platform will play a major role in terms of underpinning models that will roll out of this plant. The company has already put in place a plan to reduce the number of platforms underpinning its models.
