The Renault-Nissan alliance has rolled out its millionth unit from its Chennai plant. The car, an LHD-spec Micra hatchback was painted in a shade of candy red and is a petrol model. It was flagged off the production line in the presence of senior officials from the automaker’s Asian operations.
This is a major milestone for the Franco-Japanese collaboration and solidifies its position as India’s second largest automobile exporter. The cars produced at this plant are currently shipped to over 106 countries across the globe.
It is their largest plant ever built and is responsible for producing 32 models of the alliance’s production line up. These are produced for the domestic market as well as the global markets. In addition to the current cars, this plant will also be responsible for the production of the third Datsun, the redi-Go model, to hit the Indian market.
Speaking on the occasion, Christian Mardrus, chairman Africa, Middle East and India region, said, “Our Chennai facility has and will continue to play a fundamental role in the development of our business in India. Today’s milestone reflects the popularity of Nissan and Renault products in India and export markets, as well as the skill and dedication of our staff. It is also a measure of the high level of support we have enjoyed from the Tamil Nadu government.”
