Renault India unveiled the Kwid earlier this month. Destined to be sold in several markets globally, the small car was unveiled with a lot of fanfare, with its SUV-inspired looks and a compact footprint. While Renault didn’t divulge any details on the engine specs at the time of the unveiling, it is now being reported that the Kwid will feature a 57bhp 800cc engine.
The 800cc petrol engine is expected to have very short gearing to make up for the lack of outright power although Renault is looking to make the Kwid one of the most fuel efficient vehicles in its segment.
The Kwid is based on the modular CMF-A platform and is the first car to be based on this platform. The equipment and feature list is something that will be one of Kwid’s selling points, with features like a 7-inch infotainment system and sat-nav as segment first features. The car will also get a digital instrument cluster as standard while airbags will be offered as optional extra.
The Kwid will be manufactured at the Chennai production facility under the Renault-Nissan alliance. Renault has made significant cost savings thanks to the CMF-A platform and with 98 per cent localisation; the brand might be able to price the Kwid in the Rs 3-4 lakh segment in order to compete with the Maruti Alto 800 and Hyundai Eon.
