Renault has taken the covers off the Duster Oroch at the 2014 Sao Paulo Motor Show in Brazil. Conceived at the French automaker’s design centre in Sao Paulo, the Duster Oroch is a pick-up truck featuring a robust stance of an SUV. Sadly, it is still in concept form although Renault says it’s a concrete illustration of its strategy to develop products tailored to Latin American markets.
Pick-up trucks account for nearly 75 per cent of the light commercial vehicle market in South America, representing over 9.2 lakh units. Renault has already announced plans to enter the pick-up market with at least two models.
The Duster Oroch’s paint features an exclusive satin-finish white and touches of orange highlighting the world of kitesurfing, which inspired the vehicle's design. The front-end gets the new brand identity and carries over some of the styling cues explored previously on the D-Cross concept car first shown at the 2012 Sao Paulo Motor Show.
The fully-integrated roof rails are claimed to protect the panoramic glass sunroof. The rear layout, meanwhile, has been specially designed to safely stow several kitesurf boards. Interestingly, the concept includes not one but two rear-mounted cameras. The dashboard has a multimedia screen which displays the images captured by the two cameras. A rotary control on the centre console can be used to operate the cameras.
As you might have guessed, this new concept is based on the hugely popular Duster compact SUV. The latter is one of Renault’s best-selling vehicles in many Latin American markets. With the Oroch concept, the French automaker is exploring the world of pick-ups - a segment it has no presence in at the moment but which accounts for annual sales of around 9 lakh units.
