Volkswagen Motorsports India has commenced the driver’s registration process for the 2018 season of the Ameo Cup. The registered candidates will be put through a special selection round on 27 and 28 January, at the Indi Karting Track, in Pune, which was formerly known as the Downtown Racing Track. The last date for registration is 21 January 2018.
Volkswagen’s one-make championship is a part of the MMSC-FMSCI Indian National Racing Championship. It will be held across all the racetracks in the country, namely - the Madras Motor Race Track in Chennai, Kari Motor Speedway of Coimbatore and the nation’s only F1 racetrack, the Buddh International Circuit in Greater Noida.
The format of the Volkswagen Ameo Cup 2018 will be the same as the 2017 Ameo Cup series. Last season, the Ameo cup witnessed 20 drivers partake in the grid from 20 different parts of the country and some from the global racing fraternity. During the course of the season, the championship will have a grid of around 20 equally prepared machines and 10 races scheduled across the year.
The Ameo Race Car packs in a 1.8-litre turbocharged powerplant from the GTI. The screaming four-banger produces 205bhp at 6100 rpm and 320Nm between 3200-4600rpm. That is way beyond the standard GTI. The engine is mated to a 3MO sourced six-speed sequential gearbox with steering-mounted paddle shifters. We had driven the actual race car last year and you can read all about it over here.
Sirish Vissa, head of Volkswagen Motorsport India, commenting on the new season, said, “Currently in its 9th year, Volkswagen has stayed committed in its efforts to promote Motorsport in India and will continue to do so going forward. The last 8 years have seen remarkable progress in terms of infrastructure, development and technology, and this progress will help make the Volkswagen Ameo Cup 2018 a season to remember.”
