Land Rover is planning to launch its new SUV, the Velar, in November. Positioned between the Evoque and the Range Rover Sport, the Velar will be sold as a completely built unit (CBU).
Land Rover had earlier announced its intentions to bring 10 new models to India, including the Velar. Now though, Rohit Suri, MD, Jaguar Land Rover India has confirmed that the Velar would be launched here in November. The Velar has been based on Jaguar land Rover’s new iQ-AI platform, and has been styled to look like a downsized version of the Range Rover.
The Velar is offered with multiple engine options ranging from a 237bhp four-cylinder Ingenium petrol right up to a 385bhp supercharged V6. All the engines are offered with an eight-speed ZF gearbox, with power going to all-four wheels through torque on demand systems.
The Range Rover Velar will be positioned in a niche segment, priced in the range of Rs 80 lakh. While this price bracket also has full-size seven-seater SUVs like the Audi Q7, Volvo XC90 and the Mercedes-Benz GLS, the Velar is targeted at those set of buyers who prefer something compact and more practical in an urban environment. The Velar will compete against the likes of the Porsche Macan and the Jaguar F-Pace, both of which have been enjoying a good demand in the Indian market.
