- The next-gen Thar was spotted with a hard-top
- The model could debut at the 2020 Auto Expo
Ahead of its launch that is expected to take place next year, the next generation Mahindra Thar was spotted in the production ready form. Reports suggest that the model will be showcased at the 2020 Auto Expo along with the new generation Scorpio.
As seen in the spy images, the upcoming Mahindra Thar will be offered with a hard-top. It remains unknown if the company will offer the hard-top as an option although a soft-top is likely to be available as an option. Compared to the outgoing generation, the new Thar will be longer and wider in dimensions.Â
The new Mahindra Thar will be based on a new ladder-on-frame platform that will also underpin the upcoming generation of the Scorpio. This new platform will enable the model to comply with the new crash norms that will come into effect later this year.
Feature wise, the next-gen Mahindra Thar is expected to come equipped with a new dashboard, three-spoke steering wheel and a large touchscreen infotainment system. In order to comply with the new safety norms, the all new Mahindra Thar will have features such as dual airbags, ABS with EBD, parking sensors, seat belt reminder and a speed alert system as standard.
Powering the current generation Thar is a 2.5-litre CRDe diesel engine that will be replaced by a BS-VI emission compliant 2.0-litre diesel motor. This engine is expected to produce 138bhp and 300 Nm of torque. Also on offer will be a low-ratio gearbox and a 4x4 drive-train. The next-gen Mahindra Thar is likely to be launched in India in 2020.
