The production version of Kia SP2i was spotted during its final rounds of testing on the Western Express Highway in Mumbai. The SUV is expected to be launched in India in the second half of this year, mostly around October 2019. The production-spec model will be showcased in June. The test prototype looks like a top-spec model that features dual-tone machined alloy wheels, roof rails and disc brakes on all four wheels.
Expected to be christened Kia Tusker or Kia Trailster, the SP2i is the production version of the Kia SP Concept that made its world debut at the 2018 Auto Expo. In March, Kia Motors displayed the SP Signature at the 2019 Seoul Motor Show, which gave us a glimpse into what the production-spec Kia SP2i will look.
The platform that underpins the Kia SP2i is the same architecture that will underpin the next-generation Hyundai Creta. The company has revealed that the SP2i will fall in the price bracket of Rs 10 lakhs to Rs 16 lakhs (ex-showroom). At this price point, it will be a direct competitor to the Tata Harrier, MG Hector, Nissan Kicks and the Hyundai Creta.
Under the hood, the production-spec Kia SP2i will employ 1.5-litre BS-VI ready turbocharged petrol and diesel motors. These powertrains will comply with the upcoming emission norms closer to the 1 April 2020 deadline. Both the engines will be available manual as well as automatic transmissions.
