Porsche may launch a flat-four engine for its entry level two-door sportscar the Cayman. The engine is likely to be derived from the German sportscar maker’s legendary 3.8-litre flat-six mill that powers the Carrera S but will now lose two cylinders and become a 2.5-litre engine.
The 2.5-litre engine will feature direct fuel injection and will be turbocharged. This is expected to give it an output of 350bhp and 487Nm of torque. Porsche is expected to mate it to a 7-speed dual clutch gearbox which will send power to the rear wheels. It is likely that Porsche may also offer a six-speed as another transmission option.
The Cayman will be the first car to get this mill and it is likely that Porsche may launch another entry level model wills the same sans the turbocharger. Such a move by the German automaker is mostly a step to reduce manufacturing costs as well as join the turbo charging trend to make its cars more eco-friendly.
Edit: Porsche has confirmed that the engine will make its debut only in 2016
