While one could easily dismiss these shots as simply showing a regular Porsche 718 Boxster racing the Nurburgring with a low-slung canvas top, closer inspection of the prototype reveals that we are actually looking at the reincarnation of the Boxster Spyder.
For starters, it had what appears to be a pair of flying buttresses on the modified engine bonnet, just like the previous Boxster Spyder. And, of course, the tent-like canvas top pulled over the smaller real one that will crown the Spyder
So, Porsche is indeed working on a 981-gen Spyder, and it will follow the same formula as its predecessor being the lightest model in the range, something it will achieve not only through the elimination of the soft-top's operating mechanism, but also via the removal of a number of equipment features like the A/C and electric roof, and the use of aluminium panels.
