Last weekend marked a historic milestone for Porsche as they rolled out the 5,00,000th Cayenne SUV from its production facility in Leipzig. The Cayenne is Porsche’s best-selling model and contributes to nearly half of the company’s global sales.
The proud owner of the unique Cayenne, a white Cayenne S Diesel that features Porsche’s twin-turbo 4.2-liter V8 engine, collected the car personally from the factory. The owner also took the car for a spin around Porsche's FIA-certified circuit and off-road course, a facility used by 2,500 Porsche customers every year.
Now in its second generation, the Cayenne was first launched in 2002 and was hit by criticism from auto enthusiasts questioning Porsche’s strategy which was earlier focused solely on manufacturing high-end sports cars. The vehicle though is regarded as the car that saved the Stuttgart-headquartered automaker from bankruptcy.
Porsche now manufacturers 83,000 Cayenne units a year at the Leipzig plant along with the Panamera and was also the 5,00,000th unit to have rolled out of the plant that once built the Carrera GT.
