Nissan has taken the wraps off its GripZ crossover at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show. Paying homage to the rally-spec 240Z cars from the 1970s, it is a new direction that the Japanese automaker has taken with its ‘Z’ sub brand. Nissan has also said that some of the inspiration for the GripZ crossover is from racing bicycles which is visible in the carbon frame on which the body panels have been mounted.
The GripZ crossover measures 4.1 metres, has a wheelbase of 2.5 metres and a seemingly high ground clearance keeping in line with the crossover image.
In terms of external design, standout elements include the V-shaped grille, 22-inch wheels, rear sloping roofline and matte black bonnet - all homage to the original 240Z rally car.
The cabin gets a minimalistic design where noticeable elements include the three-spoke wheel, orange and white dashboard and grey sports seats.
Nissan has fitted the GripZ with a series hybrid powertrain. They have not specified the petrol engine but have said the electric motor is the same one from the Leaf EV.
The Japanese automaker has not confirmed if the GripZ will be put into production but has hinted that it is keen to gauge the public reaction to the vehicle over the next few days.
