Rising pollution levels and growing awareness has prompted India to form a committee which will feature automobile industry experts, executives and government officials. The committee will monitor the development of technology for manufacturing of the electric and hybrid vehicles. The move will also help in boosting the ‘Make in India’ initiative and also have more green vehicles on the road.
Mahindra Reva electric division is a popular name which manufactures electric cars in India. However, all vital components including the battery, motor and motor controllers are imported thereby creating problems for government programs for Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric Vehicles in India (FAME). Along with working out ways to set up charging infrastructure, the government has also rolled out various incentives to promote utilisation of green vehicles under the FAME scheme.
The new committee will monitor the work of the Technology Platform for Electric Mobility (TPEM) which was set up under the Department of Heavy Industry and Ministry of Science and Technology to develop an indigenous technology. It will also help vehicle manufacturers to roll out electric vehicles at affordable prices.
