Osamu Suzuki, chairman Suzuki Motor Corporation, made a surprise visit to the Manesar plant of MSIL on Monday. During the visit, he praised the spirits of those who had returned to work and their efforts in re-opening the plant earlier than expected. He also apologized for the violence that resulted in the death of HR executive Awanish Kumar Dev and injuries to 96 other employees of the company.
There were reports that the SMC chairman might skip visiting the riot affected plant, but his actual plans were disclosed very late – probably due to safety concerns. Mr Suzuki reached the plant by noon and conducted a tour of the shop floor, personally meeting many of the officials who had been injured in the July 18 violence. Osamu’s visit is being seen as part of an effort to restore and improve worker-management ties that went sour after the violence.
The Suzuki chief is on a week-long visit to the country. He also met Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi to discuss issues related to the construction of the new plant at Hansalpur.
