Its official! Ford will launch the EcoSport compact crossover for the Indian market at a function in Delhi on June 26. After many months of spy shots, speculations, international launches, soft unveiling and a mega media drive in Goa; the Ford EcoSport will finally be on the road. Ford had already begun shipping the car to its dealers across the country and they in turn have been accepting bookings for it since June 14 by charging Rs 50, 000 as the booking amount.
We have already driven the sub four metre compact crossover and know all of its details including the variants as well as the extensive feature list and are now desperately waiting for the American automaker to launch the car.
The American automaker has invested over 142 million USD (Rs 830 Crore) in its Chennai plant to facilitate the production of the EcoSport. It is also one of the five locations globally where the compact crossover is being produced.
The EcoSport is based on Ford's new B-platform (not to be confused with the old one from the late 80s and early 1990s) that underpins vehicles like the B-Max MPV and the Fiesta hatchback. These are all vehicles that come under Ford global car portfolio; basically at least one model from this line up will be available in every market that Ford sells its vehicles in.
Ford is believed to be banking heavily on the EcoSport to return it (in terms of sales) to days of the initial days of the Ikon sedan and Figo hatchback. It has already said that it will price the crossover competitively and is expected to use its export to around 32 countries as leverage in this regard.
