News of a rear-wheel drive and V6-engine powered R8 have been doing the rounds for the past couple of years. Although the rumours of a rear-wheel R8 turned out to be true when Audi launched the ‘purist’ R8 RWS, the six-cylinder R8 is not happening.
The rumours, however, weren’t baseless as pictures of Audi’s own roadmap showed a V6 R8 in 2018. The idea might have been to make the R8 more accessible for the numbers game. But it seems that the idea of a V6 for the flagship supercar might have not gone down well with brand R8 which now sits in the big league with the Lamborghini V10 under its hood.
The V6 that was touted to power the R8 was the 2.9-litre twin-turbo V6 that now powers the Audi RS4 Avant and the RS5 Coupe. So, the R8 will continue with both - the all-wheel and the rear-wheel drive versions powered by the 500+ bhp V10 petrol engine. Also, the facelift of the Audi R8 is due soon as we have already spotted a few camouflaged prototypes testing in the real world.
