The process of shipping cars from the north to the south and vice versa may get a waterway boost as the Central Government is now proposing that the vehicles be shipped to Mundra port in Gujarat and then be transported to Delhi via road. The move will help cut expenses on fuel and is also expected to promote waterways as a means of transport.
A report from the Economic Times says that the Shipping Ministry has been tasked with formulating a feasibility report in this regard. It suggests that the recently appointed road transport, highways and shipping minster Nitin Gadkari is looking into the issue and has asked the concerned officials to prepare the plan. Such a method of transporting vehicles will cost the companies around 55 paise per km as compared to the current method using roads where it costs Rs 1.5 per kilometre.
We believe that such a method will benefit the manufacturers to large extent as it will permit them to move larger volumes of vehicles in both directions for a much lesser cost. This in turn will reduce waiting periods for the cars.
