Nissan has unveiled its Renault Duster based Terrano compact SUV for the Indian market at a function in Mumbai. The Terrano is their first compact SUV for the Indian market and has already been spotted testing on multiple occasions. However, the car was spotted on August 17 at a stockyard sans camouflage revealing all the details of the production spec version and showing us that Nissan has gone to significant lengths to differentiate the Terrano from the Duster. It will be produced locally alongside the Duster at the Franco-Japanese alliance’s plant outside Chennai. Nissan has confirmed that bookings will begin from September 1, with deliveries starting before the festive season.
The Nissan Terrano while retaining the same overall design of the Renault Duster gets restyled head lights, a honeycomb grille in place of the horizontal slats. The side profile remains the same as the Duster thanks to the large roof rails, flared wheel arches and similar design of the doors. However, at the back the Terrano gets a more chiselled look as compared to the Duster. The major changes include restyled tail lamps and a different design for the number plate holder. The Terrano also gets new 16-inch alloy wheels but it is likely to be offered only the higher spec variants.
It gets interiors similar to that of the Renault Duster but with a different colour scheme and obviously a whole host of Nissan badges. This also means that the car will be extremely spacious and very comfortable for five people to travel comfortably. The car will be offered in six colours; red, white, black, red, grey and silver.
In terms of engine and underpinngs, the Terrano is expected to use the same engines as the Duster. This means the petrol unit is a 1.6-litre petrol mill producing 104PS and 145Nm of torque while the oil burner is a 1.5-litre mill that can be had either with 85PS/200Nm of torque or 110PS/248Nm of torque. Both units make use of a five-speed manual gearbox to transmit power to the front wheels. It is likely that the Nissan Terrano will also get a four-wheel drive option.
Its presence at the dealer stockyard means that the car will soon reach show rooms; bookings will begin soon as Nissan has confirmed that the car will be launched the begining of October. It will compete with the Renault Duster, Mahindra XUV500, Force One SX variant and most importantly the Ford EcoSport. We expect it to be priced Rs 40, 000 more than the equivalent variant of the Duster.
