Nissan will hold the global unveiling of the Datsun K2 hatchback at a function in Delhi tomorrow. This is the first car from the revived brand and will be launched for the local market at the 2014 Indian Auto Expo next January. The brand was revived by the Japanese automaker in 2012 after a period of 30 years and is their entry into the low cost car segments of markets like Russia, India, South Africa and Brazil.
The new model has been codenamed 'K2' and it will be based on the same platform V-platform (Versatile) as that the Micra. In fact, it will take more than a few lessons from the development of the Micra and also share components and fitments at the Nissan’s Chennai facility.
It will sit below the present generation Micra but will get an all-new design. The company has confirmed that it will not be a complete stripped down version of Nissan Micra but will be smaller yet will have roomier interiors.
The K2 is expected to follow the I2 and the K2 seven-seater. The I2 will mostly be an A-segment car which is expected to be priced in the range of Rs 2.5 Lakh and above, while the K2 seven-seater is most likely to be in the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga category.
The Datsun K2 will compete with most of Maruti’s small car range, the Hyundai i10 and the Chevrolet Spark. We are excited about the car especially after seeing the recently launched Micra Active. Tune into CarWale at 11:00 AM tomorrow for all the details from the global unveiling in Delhi.
