Launched back in 2002, the original XC90 set the bar in the SUV segment for Volvo with its combination of space, versatility and safety. It went on to become a big seller for the Swedish carmaker. Now, over a decade later, Volvo is set to introduce the next-generation model of the XC90 later this year.
The upcoming XC90 is the first Volvo to use the brand’s Scalable Product Architecture (SPA), which creates a wide range of design possibilities for different body styles. As reported earlier, the new XC90’s engine range will consist only of four-cylinder units. Called Drive-E engine range, Volvo has made it official that this new engine family, over time, be introduced across the brand’s entire range.
The top of the range ‘Twin Engine’ will carry the badge ‘T8’ and, according to the company, be a plug-in electric car, hybrid car and high-performance car rolled into one. Under normal driving conditions, the car will be driven in the default hybrid mode. This utilises a 2-litre, four-cylinder supercharged and turbocharged petrol engine that powers the front wheels and an 80bhp electric motor that drives the rear wheels. The combined power output, meanwhile, is rated at around 400bhp and 640Nm of torque.
Volvo has already revealed that it will launch the new XC90 globally later this year. When launched, the vehicle will replace the original XC90 which continues to be on sale even today. And like the original model, the new XC90 will compete with the likes of BMW X5, Audi Q7 and Land Rover Discovery 4.
