- Expected to be assembled locally
- 2.5-litre hybrid petrol engine
The next-generation Toyota Camry will be launched in India on 11 December. This is the ninth-generation Camry globally and will be assembled locally and also marks 11 years since Toyota began making the Camry Hybrid in India.
Improved package
The next-gen Camry is a radical departure from the safe lines and design of the previous models with a wider grille, sharper headlamps and a Lexus-like rear-end design. While the exterior design may be a radical step up, the cabin is standard Toyota fare with familiar-looking dual-digital displays, a Toyota steering wheel as well as the layout of the centre console. Its party piece will of course be the rear seat package that’s expected to include things like individual climate zones, seat back screens, USB-C charging ports, curtains, JBL sound system and of course oodles of spaces thanks to the car’s massive wheelbase.
Hybrid powertrain
It’s a full hybrid model powered by a 2.5-litre four-cylinder producing 222bhp and mated to an eCVT powering the front wheels. There is also an AWD version but India has always got the FWD version and we don’t expect that to change for this new generation. The current car has a mileage of 19kmpl and we expect this one to be even higher.
Rivals and pricing
The Camry’s only has two sedan rivals. The first one is the new Skoda Superb that will be launched next year while the other is the BYD Seal which is an EV. SUV rivals include the Volkswagen Tiguan, new Skoda Kodiaq, Toyota Fortuner, MG Gloster, Hyundai Tucson and also the Hyundai Ioniq 5 EV.
