The next generation (Maruti) Suzuki Alto (A-Star in India) is slated to be more eco-friendly. According to a report from Just-Auto.com, the new model is expected to be fitted with regenerative braking system as well as a start-stop system usually only found on much bigger vehicles. All this expected to give the next generation Alto a fuel efficiency of 33kmpl!
The new global Alto which is slated to be called the ‘Alto Eco’ will be lighter due to a revised body design as well as reduction in the number of parts on the vehicle. Some reports suggest that new Alto/A-star will also get a small diesel engine and this should make it quite a big hit in markets like ours where oil-burners rule the roost. If launched in India it will compete against the Chevrolet Beat diesel and the upcoming Tata Nano diesel. However, the company has not issued any official statement in this regard.
The Alto has been on sale in the Indian market in one form or another since 1983 when MSIL (called Maruti Udyog at that time) launched the 800DX. It latest Indian iteration the Alto 800 was launched in October last year and has been having steadily increasing sales since November onwards. This is the reason that the next generation Alto is sold in India as the A-Star and is exported to European markets from here. This new model might replace the A-Star as the next generation model after the launch in Europe.
