>This is the next S-Class, expected to arrive in 2020
>Will be more spacious and have upgraded autonomous driving capabilities
What you’re looking at are early shots of Mercedes’ new S-Class being tested in the city of Stuttgart in Germany.
Sources state that the next iteration of Merc’s flagship saloon will receive tech that boosts the current Level-2 autonomy. There’s talk about upgrading the active proximity control, active steer assist systems, ability to handle critical situations (urban streets and junctions) and drive-pilot capabilities that links to GPS satellites. As you’d expect, all these updates gets the next S-Class closer to fully-autonomous capabilities.
Needless to say, there’s more electrification due in the next S-Class which will give it an edge over the current hybrid S 560e. Essentially, it will see an increment in performance and the 50km of pure-electric range that the current model dishes out. Reports confirm that the electrification is vital to ensuring that the new car can be driven in cities which may soon enforce zero emissions.
