Next generation Mahindra Scorpio launched in India for Rs 7.98 lakh

The new Mahindra Scorpio has been launched in the Indian market for Rs 7.98 lakh (ex-showroom Mumbai). It is available in five new variants and with two new colour options. This is the most significant update for the SUV since 2006 as the Mumbai-based automaker has made a significant number of cosmetic as well as mechanical changes when compared to the outgoing vehicle.

On the outside, the new Scorpio gets projector headlamps, a new chrome grille, fog lamps and redesigned alloy wheels. The top-end S10 variant also gets projector headlamps with DRLs, new bumpers with fog lamps, a chrome grille and LED tail lamps. Common features across all variants are the black dual tone applique on the rear door, road bumper armour and  the chrome bezel on the fenders.

Inside, Mahindra has fitted the top-spec variant of the new Scorpio with climate control, parking sensors, TPMS and a 6-inch touch screen infotainment system. While the instrument cluster is all new, the upholstery has been revised and is now a dual tone with the combination of grey and blue. Mahindra has also included height adjustment for the driver’s seat.

Mahindra has worked heavily on the mechanicals of the new Scorpio. It has introduced an all-new platform (which will underpin future models) comprising a new modular ladder frame chassis.  It has also updated the suspension, shock absorbers as well as fitted a new Banjo axle for the rear of the SUV. It has also worked on the front suspension and added an improved clutch.

The new Scorpio will continue to be powered by the 2.2-litre mHAWK four-cylinder engine that produces 120bhp and 280Nm of torque. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a five-speed manual transmission and in the 4WD models the changing from 2WD to 4WD can be done on the fly using a toggle switch in the centre console.

As mentioned earlier, the new Scorpio will be available in five new variants, S2, S4, S6, S8 and S10 with the S4 and S6 also getting the option of an additional safety package in the coming weeks. The colour options include white, black, silver, red and blue of which the latter two are the new colours.

The Scorpio has been priced at Rs 7.98 lakh putting it in competition with vehicles like the Renault Duster, Ford EcoSport as well as C-segment sedans like the Honda City, Hyundai Verna, VW Vento and Skoda Rapid.
