Honda managed to attract a lot of crowd last month at the New York Auto Show with the striking looking Civic concept. Previewing the upcoming generation of the brand’s popular sedan, the concept has now evolved into early production stage as prototype models have started appearing on the web.
Prototypes of the tenth generation Civic have been spotted on test in Germany. The US-spec models will feature a brand new 1.5-litre VTEC engine with turbocharging. It will be paired with either a 6-speed manual or a new continuously variable transmission (CVT).
The global development of the new Civic sedan and the coupe has been undertaken by a North American R&D team. The design, meanwhile, is being led a team from their Los Angeles design studio. All in all, the forthcoming generation of the US-spec Civic will be available in a variety of body styles including the high-performance Si and Type R models.
Honda India pulled the plug on the Civic back in 2012 owing to sluggish sales and the brand has no visible intentions of bringing the car back in India anytime soon. If launched, the new Civic would compete in the D-segment that currently includes the Toyota Corolla, Chevrolet Cruze and the Hyundai Elantra.
