The next generation BMW X1 and FAST CUV (family active sports tourer) have been spotted testing together in Europe. Both cars are expected to make their debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show later this year in concept form and will reach production by this time next year.
The photos reveal that the X1 will retain the same overall shape as the current car but with revisions to the fascia in the form of full LED headlights and what appears to be a modified bumper. The side profile remains the same but at the rear we see circular tail lamps in place of BMW’s signature wrap around units. However, we believe that this is most probably component testing and that on the final version, we will get to see the rectangular wrap around lamps. There is also a major possibility that this generation of X1 will also spawn a seven-seater variant.
The FAST CUV is expected to slot between the X1 and 2 Series Active Tourer and will share much of its design with the X1 but get much of its underpinnings and technology from the Active Tourer. It also appears to be slightly smaller than the X1 and has a slightly higher roofline.
Where these vehicles are expected to get their biggest change is in the platform. BMW has already confirmed that the next generation X1 will move to the UKL1 front-wheel platform which already underpins the new generation Mini hatchbacks as well as the 2 Series Active Tourer.
While the company has not officially issued any information on its plans with these cars , we believe that they are aimed at developing markets where cost is king but prestige of the brand is also equally important.
