- Available only with petrol power
- Now only in LWB guise
The next-generation BMW 5 Series has been launched in India with a starting price of Rs 72.90 lakh (ex-showroom). It is available in two variants, two colour schemes and with one petrol engine option. Globally, this is the eighth generation for BMW’s ultra-successful mid-size sedan.
Exterior highlights
On the outside, the new 5 Series gets the latest-generation BMW’s signature kidney grille with sleek full LED headlamps while in profile BMW is offering both 18-inch and 19-inch wheels as a part of the package. It’s here on the side that you can see the additional length over the outgoing model most of which has been concentrated in the wheelbase. The rear has lost the roundedness of the previous generation and has gone in for a sharper look with a thick bumper and signature wrap-around LED tail lamps.
Interior and feature highlights
Inside, it’s the new-age BMW cabin design with highlights like the one-piece screen housing the cluster and infotainment system while the centre console is large and house a lot of the periphery controls like the scroll wheel and gear selector mechanism. The whole cabin has been trimmed out in brown with grey as the secondary colour and blue ambient lighting as default.
The second row is very spacious and as expected from a 5 Series has all the expected creature comforts one would demand in the segment. However, it is missing out on the massive rear screen which is one of the signature elements of its big brother, the 7 Series.
Top elements in the feature list include a panoramic sunroof, Bowers and Wilkins sound system, multi-zone climate control, interior camera, leatherette upholstery, wireless charger and phone mirroring, connected car technology, 360-degree camera and driver assistance systems including automatic parking.
Powertrain options
The new 5 Series is only available with one petrol engine which is a 2.0-litre four-cylinder motor producing 256bhp/400Nm and mated to an eight-speed AT powering the rear wheels. This engine has a 48V mild hybrid system and a 0-100kmph time of 6.5 seconds.
The 5 Series, in this new-gen, is a rival for the upcoming Mercedes-Benz E-Class LWB but also the Audi A6. You can also look at SUVs like the Mercedes GLC, BMW X3 and the Audi Q5.
