The current Volkswagen Touareg, which is in its second generation, has been around for quite some time. It was introduced in 2012 and has been soldiering on with minor cosmetic changes. After the Tiguan getting an update recently, the next-gen of Volkswagen’s flagship SUV has been spotted undergoing tests in northern Sweden for the first time.
This new generationTouareg is speculated to be influenced by the T-Prime concept showcased at the 2016 Beijing Motor Show. The test mule under the little camouflage somewhat ratifies that. The headlights seem sleeker and the grille with the side air vents appears to remain true to the one on the T-Prime concept. The side profile is similar to the current Touareg but then again at the rear, the camouflage hides the new design of the taillights and the T-Prime styled tailgate. The slightly sloping roofline differentiates the Touareg from the other forthcoming larger crossover, the Atlas.
The new Touareg will be based on Volkswagen Group’s MLB platform and will be lighter than the outgoing model. A revamped and upmarket interiors with feature and the technology-laden cabin is probable as well. Volkswagen would bring the new Touareg with V6 TDI engines followed by a plug-in hybrid powertrain. The test-mule, however, had a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder petrol engine under the hood.
Volkswagen is on a roll lately, with an onslaught of SUVs. The Tiguan followed by the Atlas and now the Touareg and several all-new models to arrive before long. The new-generation Touareg is expected to be revealed this year and is expected to take the roads by 2018.
