The discontinuation of the STI brand of cars from Subaru was a heartbreak for a huge number of enthusiasts. With emission laws getting stricter by the day, offering just performance doesn’t cut it anymore. With almost all super and hyper cars going the hybrid way, Subaru could just head in the same direction with its STI wing. The 2.5 litre boxer engine is an absolute stonker but it simply does not stand a chance to survive the oncoming electric future.
News from the Subaru stable is that they might just not run the WRX STI temporarily. Although no decision has been made regarding the new WRX STI’s drivetrain setup, the company is said to be investigating all possibilities, including a hybrid.
The recently showcased Subaru Viziv Performance Concept sheds valuable insight into the next-generation WRX STI. While Subaru did not give out technical specifications, the modular platform the next WRX STI will share with the Impreza was developed with electrification in mind, so a plug-in hybrid WRX STI isn’t entirely out of the question.
