Mercedes-Benz is actively working on the development of an all-new generation of the E-Class, as seen in these latest spy photographs. Spotted undergoing high-speed tests at the famous Nurburgring circuit, this new model will replace the current E-Class that has been around for nearly five years.
While the next-gen E-Class will be marginally bigger in size than the current model, it will be lighter than the latter thanks to the extensive use of aluminium in its architecture. The mid-size luxury sedan is expected to have a longer wheelbase, which will be translated into improved rear passenger space.
The engine line-up for the next-gen E-Class is likely to include new three and four-cylinder engines, although our sources indicate that Mercedes could bring back straight six engines.
As for the high-performance AMG model, the brand will introduce the familiar 4-litre, twin turbo V8 in the next E63 AMG. Like in the current model, the next-gen E63 AMG will feature all-wheel drive as an option and a more powerful E63 AMG S version.
The current generation E-Class has been around since 2010, albeit with a number of major updates. This next-generation model, meanwhile, is expected to arrive in late 2015 or early 2016 to compete with the Audi A6 and the BMW 5 Series.
