Although the next-gen Mercedes SL is years away from its official launch, Mercedes it seems has begun work on an early prototype. The vehicle, which was recently spotted at the Nurburgring circuit in Germany, will be an all-new model featuring a new platform.
The next-gen SL will be significantly different from the current model. Given Merc’s heavy focus on efficiency lately, the new SL will be built around a modular sports car architecture (MSA) that will be used for the brand’s upcoming sporty models including the smaller SLC.
The arrival of the MSA platform on both SL and SLC will be a stark contrast from the current setup, specifically the exclusive use of a different chassis for the SL. However, with the modular platform, the manufacturing process for both models will also shift and become geared toward sharing elements like the front bulkhead and parts of the suspension.
That said, buyers of both these vehicles should expect some unique styling details for differentiation. Even with a common platform, certain elements like the overall dimensions would be kept different.
