The next generation BMW X1 has been spotted on test in Europe. These set of spy shots show the car with a little less of its psychedelic camouflage and reveal a few more details about the car including the overall design.
Pictures of the fascia reveal a more prominent and larger kidney bean grille while it appears that the front bumper is now a slatted unit as compared to a chrome heavy unit in the current model. The head lamps appear to be full LED units while the bulges on the bonnet appear to be less prominent.
The rake in the roofline when viewed from the side appears more conventional while the roof spoiler has added a bit more sportiness to the overall appearance. What also appear to be changed are the ground clearance as well as the wheels. The rear profile looks to be the same as the current car, however, the hatch door is different and appears to be smaller.
We also know what the interior will be like with pictures revealing that it picks up much of its design from the 2 Series Active tourer. The biggest change will be the underpinnings. This new model will move from the RWD platform to the UKL1 FWD platform that currently underpins the new generation of Mini hatchbacks. Since this is an ‘X’ designated vehicle, xDrive will be offered on specific variants but a majority of the offerings will be FWD.
This new car is also expected to spawn a 7-seater model and is expected to remain the entry- level BMW till 2017 where it will be preceded by a 1 Series- based model. It is expected to be unveiled at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show and will go on sale in Europe immediately. If all goes according to plan, then India will get this X1 by the end of next year.
