Volvo revealed the all-new V60 last week and now we get the first teaser image of its sedan sibling, the S60. The third-generation S60 was teased undergoing winter testing in Lofoten, Norway by the carmaker’s CEO, Håkan Samuelsson.
Looking at Volvo’s design philosophy, the new S60 has little to hide under the camouflage since we know it will have a similar grille and the characteristic headlamps. The sedan will look like a scaled down S90 and carry all other design elements from the current crop of Volvos. As can be seen in the pictures, the S60 gets Thor’s Hammer headlamps which edge-out to the grille just like in the V60. The masculine bumpers are hard to miss while the sedan is seen on all-black wheels.
On the inside, we expect the same recognisable cabin with quality fit and finish and premium materials. The same nine-inch touchscreen infotainment screen will dominate the dashboard while the functional cabin will be loaded with all the bells and whistles expected from the mid-size executive sedan. The safety features will be the best in class with no less than five stars in NCAP rating when it arrives.
The S60 will be built on the same Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) as the other Volvos with the same line of powertrain as the V60. Which means that the S60 will be powered by two plug-in hybrid gasoline mills and two oil burners. The eight-speed automatic transmission would be standard. The potent Polestar variant is also expected to be joined later, however, the Cross Country variant is highly doubtful given the poor sales of the outgoing car.
The teaser also announced that the new S60 will be built at the carmaker’s new facility in South Carolina later this year. When launched, the new S60 will continue its competition against the likes of the Jaguar XE, BMW 3 Series, Mercedes-Benz S-Class and the Audi A4. Volvo will bring in the new S60 to India promptly after it goes on sale in the international markets.
