Yet another test mule of the new-generation Mahindra Thar was spotted testing last week. The prototype was a near-production unit and seems to be under the final stages of testing. The new set of spy shots also reveal the all-new interiors, although the mule was completely camouflaged.
The next-gen Thar is likely to debut at the 2020 Auto Expo, and its market launch is expected to take place, shortly after its unveiling. The new Thar seems to have grown in size but will carry a design silhouette that will be similar to the outgoing model. The 2020 Mahindra Thar is expected to be underpinned by a new platform, which will make it longer and wider than the current model.
The interiors, as seen in the spy shots, are a departure from the almost decade-old design. Besides the modern dashboard layout, the next-gen Thar will feature a new steering wheel, updated front seats and front-facing rear seats with dedicated seatbelts. The new Mahindra Thar will reportedly draw power from an all-new BS-VI compliant 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel motor. It will come paired to a low-range gearbox and a four-wheel-drive transfer case.
The 2020 Mahindra Thar will continue to be a niche offering in the nascent off-road SUV segment. It will compete against the Force Gurkha, which will soon get an update next year.
