Toyota is about to add yet another model to China’s booming luxury car market with the launch of the new Crown. Scheduled to hit the showrooms locally next month, the new Crown is based on the Crown Majesta which is only sold in Japan. In China, this new model will be manufactured by the FAW-Toyota joint venture.
Besides a slightly different front-end, the China-made Crown is also slightly longer than the latest-gen Crown Majesta which has been in the Japanese market since 2013. The former is powered by either a 2.5-litre V6 petrol engine with 193bhp of power and 236Nm of torque or a 2-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine.
Toyota has been selling the Crown in China since 2005; however, the car has failed to sell in great numbers primarily due to its relatively high price and fuel guzzling engines. With the new, highly efficient 2-litre turbo engine, the Japanese automaker is looking to do much better this time around.
