After showcasing it for the first time at the 2014 Beijing Auto Show, Toyota has launched the latest generation Corolla in the China auto market. With prices ranging between 107.800 yuan (Rs 10.32 lakh) and 134.800 yuan (Rs 12.95 lakh), the new Corolla has forayed into China’s lucrative compact sedan segment.
Design-wise, the car remains nearly identical to the models sold in other Asian and a few European markets. The interior of the China-specific model, however, is different with its all-black theme for the dashboard and upholstery.
Mechanically, the China-specific model is available with two petrol engine options – a 1.6-litre four-cylinder unit producing 120bhp of power and a more powerful 1.8-litre unit with around 138bhp. Both these engines are paired with either a 5-speed manual or a CVT automatic gearbox.
According to the report, the previous iteration of the Corolla failed to strike the right chord with Chinese car buyers owning to its small size for the money Toyota was charging. The new Corolla, however, is bigger and more spacious in every way and yet, it is priced nearly on par with the previous generation model. The added size and comfort, then, should help improve the new car’s fortunes in the Chinese market.
The latest generation Corolla was recently launched in the Indian market. The car features a similar exterior design although the interior is finished in beige and black combo which, compared to an all-black interior, fares better among Indian buyers. Engine wise, Toyota India has continued with its previous line-up consisting of the 1.8-litre petrol unit and a 1.4-litre diesel unit. The car competes with other D-segment sedans such as the Renault Fluence, Chevrolet Cruze and the Hyundai Elantra.
