- Will debut with the Harrier EV
- The current Tata range is completely FWD
A patent image of a terrain mode selector dial from Tata has pointed at new options for the automaker’s SUV range. The concept of being able to select traction modes debuted with the Tata Harrier in 2019 and can also be had on the Tata Safari. The current traction modes comprise normal, rough and wet while this image indicates the addition of gravel, sand, snow and rough roads as a part of the deal. The addition of these more intense terrain response systems is indicative that it is working on an AWD option for its big SUVs.
Currently, the entire Tata passenger range, EV and ICE, is FWD with the automaker indicating that they have the systems in place for AWD for the ICE range if there is sufficient demand. Among its rivals, the Mahindra XUV700, Mahindra Scorpio N and the Jeep Compass as well as the Meridian offer 4WD/AWD in their lineup.
The Harrier EV concept that’s been shown over the last two years and due in 2025 will get AWD and what we are looking at is possibly its terrain mode selector. This is will be achieved via dual electric motors mounted on both axles. The Harrier EV is, of course, expected to spawn a Safari EV at some point and this too will get the AWD option.
